DESCRIPTION:Chemistry of π-bond systems between heavier group 14 elements
\nThe lecture highlights how π\\piπ-bonded compounds of heavier group 14
  elements feature a high-lying HOMO\, a low-lying LUMO\, and thus a narrow
HOMO–LUMO gap—key for advanced organic optoelectronic materials and e
fficient electron transfer. [Takahiro Sasamori lecture.pdf]The talk also d
iscusses the broader motivation of designing systems capable of activating
  inert small molecules such as CO2\\mathrm{CO_2}CO2 and N2\\mathrm{N_2}
N2 without transition metals. Prof. Sasamori will present recent synthe
tic strategies and unique reactivity of highly stable π\\piπ-bonded comp
ounds bearing reactive functional groups (including H and Br substituents)
as well as heavier group 14 triple-bond systems.

als has shown that the incorporation of main group elements such as boron\
 , silicon\, selenium\, tellurium\, and phosphorus in particular\, is an e
fficient strategy to obtain sustainable materials with intriguing properti
es for a host of practical applications ranging from organic light emittin

DESCRIPTION:Carborane Substituted Boron Lewis Superacids\nDodecacarborane
clusters (C2B10H12) have been known for 60 years yet their application as
an electron withdrawing group is not well established. Our group has been
preparing boranes that feature two or three ortho-carboranes as bulky elec
tron withdrawing groups on boron to enhance the Lewis acidity. The reactiv
ity of the new boranes is compared to the state-of-the-art boranes with fl
uoroaryl groups revealing significantly greater Lewis acidity. The large s
teric profile of the carboranes make it an excellent Lewis acid partner in
frustrated Lewis pair chemistry. A compound with two carboranes and a hyd
ride is one of the most potent hydroboration reagents known that is capabl
e of the uncatalyzed hydroboration of cyclopropanes. The properties of the
feature compounds\, mechanisms of the reactions\, and isolation of reacti
 ve intermediates will be discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Pyroelectric materials convert fluctuating heat flows to elect
rical energy. The most efficient pyroelectric materials are inorganic ferr
oelectrics\, that is\, materials showing spontaneous\, switchable electric
polarization. We have developed a computational methodology to study the
atomic-level mechanisms of pyroelectricity in inorganic ferroelectrics. We
determine the primary pyroelectric coefficients by combining hybrid densi
ty functional calculations with self-consistent phonon theory and the Berr
y phase approach for polarization. Secondary pyroelectric coefficients are
evaluated by combining thermal properties from quasi-harmonic approximati
on with elastic and piezoelectric coefficients.
