DESCRIPTION:Asst. Prof. Jonathan Kephart\, Cornell University\, USA\n\n'Co
ordinative Tug-of-War on a Cluster Surface and the Making of Molecular Rus
t'\n\nLigand-stabilized inorganic clusters bridge molecular and materials
chemistry\, providing atomically precise platforms to model surface reacti
vity and quantum-confined inorganic fragments whose properties differ from
those of bulk solids. This talk will describe well-defined\, surface-like
reactivity in a new class of ternary clusters and preliminary efforts tow
ard the synthesis and reactivity of unusual molecular metal oxides. ...

DESCRIPTION:Prof. Olga Boltalina\, Colorado State University\, USA\n\n'Fro
m Serendipity to Selectivity: An Introspective Overview of Fluorine Chemis
try of Molecular Carbons and Applications in Organic Electronics'\n\nFluor
inated fullerenes are a distinctive class of molecular fluorocarbons. Unli
ke fluorinated graphene\, nanotubes or other nanocarbon materials\, they h
ave well-defined compositions and structures\, which makes them uniquely s
uited to establishing structure–property relationships. This lecture pre
sents an introspective account of three decades of research in this field.
It discusses initial fascination of fluorine chemists with “superlubric
ant” C60F60\, which has never been made\, followed by the discovery of t
heir exceptional electron acceptor ability and attempts to utilize as cath
odes in Li primary batteries. ...

DESCRIPTION:AC-Kolloquium - Asst. Prof. Lucile Chatelain\, Université de
Bretagne Occidentale UBO\, Brest\n\n'Bioinspired {Fe2S2} and Uranium Compl
exes for Small-Molecule Activation (H2\, CO2 and N2)'\n\nAddressing the gl
obal energy and climate challenges requires sustainable approaches to both
energy production and the valorization of abundant small molecules. There
 fore\, the activation of H2\, CO2 and N2 is a fundamental challenge that d
rives the development of new molecular systems. The presentation will cove
r work in this field inspired by natural enzymes. \n[FeFe]-hydrogenases ef
ficiently catalyze H2 into protons under mild conditions.1 Bioinspired {Fe
2S2} complexes have demonstrated that proton reduction is more accessible
than H2 oxidation. To activate H2\, we formed inter- and intramolecular pa
irs between a {Fe2S2} complex coordinated by phosphine ligands and a boran
e-type Lewis acid.2–4 Our group demonstrated heterolytic activation of H
2\, validating a Frustrated Lewis Pair approach. ...

DESCRIPTION:Prof. Crispin Lichtenberg\, Universität Marburg\n\n'What’s
Your Charge? Neutral\, Cationic\, and Anionic Bismuth Compounds for Synthe
sis and Catalysis'\n\nMolecular bismuth compounds can be designed to show
a pronounced polarizability\, low homolytic bond dissociation energies and
reversible bond cleavage / formation events. We aim to exploit these prop
erties to create uncommon structural motifs and to realize selective group
transfer reactions in stoichiometric and catalytic scenarios. Granting ac
cess to well-defined neutral\, cationic\, and anionic compounds has been r
evealed as a key strategy to control and fine-tune the properties and reac
 tivity patterns of these compounds.
