 riguing electronic structures\, reactivity profiles\, and physical (optica
 l\, electronic\, magnetic) properties. Consequently\, they have a substant
 ial potential in synthesis and catalysis as well as molecular building-blo
 cks for advanced functional materials.  The inherent high reactivity and t
 hermal instability of these open-shell species  remain however major issue
 s in exploiting their full potential for practical  applications.
