Application and Registration

Requirements

The admission to the Master of Science programme in Chemistry requires a first qualified academic degree (usually a Bachelor of Science) in chemistry or a related subject.

This degree must have an overall grade of at least 2.9 (German grade system) and the applicant must have successfully studied modules in an amount of at least 25 credit points (CP) in each of the following disciplines

  • Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry,
  • Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry
  • Physical and Theoretical Chemistry

Please note: Graduates of a Bachelor programme with focus on Pharmaceutical Science usually do not fulfil these requirements.

Since the courses of our Master programme will be given in English, students have to prove proficiency in this language at B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The proof for the English language proficiency has to be provided with the application for the admission to the Master programme.

Students will be admitted to the programme on the basis of the results of an assessment process.

An admission to the programme is only possible for the winter term.

Assessment procedure

The assessment procedure provides the basis to recognize those applicants who fulfil the entry requirements so that they will most probably successfully complete the Master programme. The programme’s examination board decides about the applications.

Students are welcome to take part in the assessment process if they have already received a first academic degree or will likely finish their degree until the start of the coming winter term.

The deadline for the application for the admission to the Master programme in the winter term is the 1st of July (receipt at the Department of Chemistry).

The form to apply for the admission to the M.Sc. programme can be downloaded here or on the pages with the other forms.

Besides the filled application form applicants have to provide the following attachments in copies:

a) a copy of an official identification (ID-card, passport)

b) a passport photograph

c) a copy of the Bachelor certificate (this has to be provided either in a German or an English version). The certificate must contain a record of the modules that have been passed (including credit points and marks).

      or

an official statement of your current university about the classes/modules that you have successfully finished (incl. grades, in a German or English version) in case the applicant has not yet finished the Bachelor degree. In these cases a preliminary admission subject to the successful completion of the degree can be made. The certificate has to be provided at the earliest opportunity (during the registration at the latest).

     or

a copy of the certificate of any alternative qualification that might qualify you for the admission (again this has to be provided either in a German or an English version)

d) a copy of the English language proficiency test (TOEFL iBT: min. 72 pts., IELTS: min. 5.5, UNIcert level II). Other tests can be recognised if the equivalence to B2 (CEFR) is established. The Chinese College English Test (CET) is not recognised. If your proof is made by five years of English classes at a German secondary school please provide copies of the respective school certificates.

The originals of the submitted copies have to be shown during the registration at the university and the examination office. All applications will be reviewed by a selection committee. In case of uncertainties it can ask the applicant to provide additional documents or invite him for an additional interview. All applicants will receive a notification from the examination board about the result of the assessment test.

Registration at the students’ office

In case of a successful assessment test the examination board grants an admission to the programme. All admitted applicants are then allowed to enrol into the programme at the students’ office of the University of Bonn (usually in the last week of September). Please make sure that you bring your notification of approval and all necessary documents (in their original form) on this occasion.

Registration at the examination office

Besides the registration at the students’ office students that enter the programme also have to register at the examination office again showing all documents necessary for the approval in original form.
